The Career Pathways Framework
Like a curriculum with defined learning outcomes, this framework provides five domains underpinned by 22 ‘skills’ against which any dental professional can map against there experience, expertise, activities and lifelong continuing professional and personal development through out their career. The framework is specifically targeted for the vast majority of dentists and allied dental professionals who work in the primary care environment. The Domains are as follows:
Clinical & Technical |
The capability to diagnose, to advise and to treat |
Professionalism |
The conduct and behaviour to engage patient trust and confidence |
Reflection |
Awareness of personal impact, abilities and limitations |
Development |
Commitment and capability to improve the service to patients |
Agency |
The ability to resolve solutions independently and through others |
Undergraduate dental programmes have clearly defined learning outcomes which dental professional students (dentists, hygienists, therapists, nurses and technicians) must achieve prior to graduation.
Dental Specialty training programmes - Dentists aspiring to be classified as specialists on their regulatory body’s dental specialty lists, have defined curricula with learning outcomes which must be attained for the award of a completion of specialty training.
Primary care dental professionals, to date, do not have a defined curriculum with learning outcomes to support their career long progress from ‘safe beginner’, on graduation, to the equivalent of an ‘accomplished practitioner’ in Primary Care dentistry. This ‘Career Pathways’ framework is an attempt by the College of General Dentistry to address this gap for the majority of the profession in dentistry.
