Aims & Objectives
During 2018-2019, a project team under the auspices of the ADEE undertook wide-ranging review of CPD - full report and executive summary. This was commissioned and published by the UK’s General Dental Council in January 2019.
During 2019-2020, a project team under the auspices of the ADEE undertook two comprehensive reviews of ‘professionalism’ and ‘preparedness for practice’. The latter addressed the issue at the point of graduation (registration) of UK graduates. These reviews were commissioned by the GDC and published in August 2020. During the reviews, the ADEE team lead chaired a ‘panel session’ on ‘professionalism’ as part of a GDC learning event on their strategy of ‘Moving Upstream’ in February 2020. Much of this event centred on the Delphi Survey about professionalism which received in excess of 1000 responses providing a wealth of data for analysis and contribution to the final report.
Professionalism: a mixed-methods research study undertaken by an ADEE project team was commissioned by the UK’s dental regulatory body, the General Dental Council (GDC) to provide a comprehensive study of professionalism in healthcare and dentistry. The Report was completed in July 2020 and is published on the GDC’s website.
The ADEE’s evidence review and research findings on professionalism will now be considered and used to inform the development of the Principles of Professionalism and the review of the GDC’s Standards for the Dental Team. The first opportunity to engage with the research findings was facilitated by the GDC in November 2020 through a webinar session
The recording of the GDC’s live event, exploring the findings from the research on professionalism in dentistry is available online (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boG1f8w8MC4). The importance of context was examined, alongside a look at what professionalism means to professionals and patients, in this session, with the lead researchers from the Association for Dental Education in Europe.
